How To: Plan a Flower-Forward Wedding

“To pause in consideration of a flower is to know one of life’s simple pleasures. . .”

If your heart melts at the sight of a landscaped garden or you literally stop to smell each rose, this post is for you. Weddings are such a representation of your style and likes, and what better way to showcase your unique style than to put a major emphasis on your florals.

No. 1 | Choose Seasonal Flowers

Talk to your florist, they’ll know what’s in season around your wedding date, by choosing seasonal flowers you can not only highlight the world around you, you can also support a local flower farm/distributor! The BEST season for flowers is Spring, I mean it has to be by default. Everything comes back to life, it’s green and the air is full of sweet pollen. Spring gifts us with beauties like: hyacinth, narcissus, lilacs and peonies.

No. 2 | Create a Wow-Element

Consider your venue. Could you wrap your tent in ivy and vines? Or design a stunning asymmetrical arch for your ceremony location? Choosing “one” item or location to enhance will bring an impressive focal point to the space. Consider something that will be well photographed; the bridal bouquet is a perfect piece to add some high-end florals to. You can also replace the standard blooms with something a little more unique. Some favorite enhanced options are: butterfly ranunculus, sweet pea, lilac, clematis, and foxglove.

No. 3 | Let Nature Inspire the Design

Things need to “visually” make sense to me in order for me to fully appreciate them. So, color, pattern, textures, and style all come into play. Sit down with your florist and talk about color schemes, overall aesthetic, and seasonality. Consider your space, the environment, and the season and start your design there. Perhaps your ocean cliff ceremony only needs low and lush arrangements down the aisle as to not obstruct the view, or your sunken garden cocktail hour could be turned into an oasis with potted hydrangeas, and that hundred-year-old oak tree that backdrops your ceremony could be drenched in greenery and florals.

BONUS | Always Hire an Experienced Florist

Review their work, does it match your style and aesthetic? Floral design is such an art, find someone who connects with your style and let them dive into that vision. I used to work for a wedding florist and the best weddings were those who put emphasis on the above tips! And if you need any florist recommendations in the CT area, don’t hesitate to ask!
